Jake

1991 - 11/01/2009

Jake died on 11th January 2009. He had been doing his favourite thing in his favourite place - walking in the Forest of Dean. He had a stroke and never recovered.

Jake had been a huge part of the family for I6 years, the lynchpin in many ways, adopted at the age of 2 from a rescue centre where he kept being returned because of his naughtiness and hyperactivity.

He certainly was a challenge! His energy levels were very difficult to live with and often showed themselves in destructive behaviour- I've lost count of the cost of having Jake a very long time ago.  I do, though, remember the £400 bill for repairing the wiring loom in the back of a Ford Escort.

Outside, he really showed his working instincts (probably a failed gun dog). He would work any undergrowth or woods, becoming deaf to our calls and oblivious to any treats. It was impossible to tire him out and on long walks he would constantly circle us at about a quarter of a mile distance.

It turned out that he had quite a food allergy and he changed very considerably when he was put on hypoallergenic food, thank goodness.

Jake was a fantastic family dog. He was surprisingly patient and extremely loving. He was like a little buddha -so full of wisdom and experience.

It was Jake and all the challenges he bought which first made me read, study and practice dog training and behaviour techniques - I have so much to thank him for. Everyone who met Jake, genuinely without exception, absolutely adored him. He had such a kind, winning way about him. He loved fuss (on his own terms, of course) and just being with people, He was the archetypal loveable rogue - whole books could be filled with funny stories about Jake's antics! It wasn't possible to be angry with Jake for long-he was just busy being Jake.

The only really bad thing Jake ever did was to leave us. Even then his health and mind were going and he left us while he still had the dignity he had enjoyed throughout life.

We love him, miss him and thank him for everything.
